  • Ultimate Blessing
5-13-12, Genesis 47: After looking at the first part of the chapter, in which the blessing of God for his covenant people in Egypt is so clearly explained, we might find the reaction of Jacob strange, as he looks at his son and makes him swear that he will get him out of Egypt. What we see, though, is that Jacob has become convinced that the Lord is in the business of keeping his promises perfectly and fully, not merely in part, and so he refuses to settle for anything less than the ultiamte blessing of God, which is not Egypt, but the heavenly city whose builder and architect is God.

  • Journey to Joseph
5-6-12, Genesis 46 - David Bailey: Joseph has been reunited with his brothers, but there is still work that needs to be done so that the whole family is preserved. In this study, we see the elderly patriarch Jacob packing up and moving to Egypt. He does not go alone, for the whole chapter centers on these words of the Lord, overflowing with assurance for the elderly Jacob and for us...I myself will go with you.

  • Practical Providence
4-29-12, Genesis 45: The Westminster Confession makes an amazing statement about sin...that sins are not merely allowed by God, but bound, ordered and governed by him according to his power and wisdom so that they fulfill his own holy purposes. This is a bold statement that takes seriously the sovereignty of God and that every creature, action and thing is governed by him. That reality is what we call providence, and it is knownn so clearly through the words of Joseph as he speaks to the brothers who sold him into slavery. In this study, we focus particularly on the way that this providence leads to forgiveness - to getting it, and to giving it.

  • Dysfunctional Family Reunion, Part 3: The Necessity of Repentance
4-22-12, Genesis 44: Before we see the reconciliation of the family in chapter 45, chapter 44 shows us an interesting move by Joseph, as he sets up Benjamin to look like a thief. This is a test, and it reveals two important things that apply not only for this family, but for the entirety of the people of God. Reconciliation requires repentance, and the Lord gives the very thing that he requires.

  • Dysfunctional Family Reunion, Part 2: How to Appease the Man
4-15-12, Genesis 43: Joseph has already saved the lives of his family for free. But as the food he gave runs out, and Jacob and the brothers face their need to return to Egypt, we see that they are still deeply suspicious of the grace that they have received. Their actions raise a question - is the grace of God worked through Christ enough to save us and to keep us, or do we need to add something else on truly to appease the Father? The answer is seen as we see the response of Joseph to the presence of Benjamin, and in the feast that ensues.
